The authors, who moved from Israel to London in the early 2000s and now have three bustling restaurants there, have an easy, comfortable command of Middle Eastern ingredients. Their culinary confidence makes everything they offer in this book seem like comfort food, even if you have never cooked with pomegranates or harissa; even if you've never charred an eggplant or put tahini in a cake or cookie. There's a short, zippy chapter on spice mixes and condiments which seems almost worth the price of the book alone—dried Persian limes mixed with mango flesh!—but you'll also find big party dishes, casual sandwiches pulled together from refrigerator leftovers, and a pleasant number of sweets as well.

We have to admit that we also have a soft spot for any book in which the first photos are of cookbooks, including a packed shelf in the authors' home that reveals some very well-worn treasures.
